| TEACHERS IN CHINA PROJECT
The Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT) is a publicly funded tertiary institution located in New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand. Programmes delivered by WITT include Certificate, Diploma and Degree courses as well as a variety of levels of English language tuition in their English Language Institute.
WITT has a business partner in Beijing operating under the name of BEIJING-WITT Educational Management Pty Ltd, more commonly known as BEIJING - WITT.
Both WITT and BEIJING-WITT have numerous partnerships and cooperation agreements with a number of high schools and universities throughout China and an organisation known as the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE). They also have a number of associations with various provincial Education Departments.
Currently partnership and cooperation agreements with high schools exist in eight different provinces and two government municipal regions. Chinese education authorities consider each of the schools, involved, to be top schools in their respective areas.
In May 2002 WITT and BEIJING-WITT entered into agreements with various high schools and the CEAIE to form what is known as the China New Zealand Friendly Experimental Classes project (FEC). Those agreements and partnership arrangements placed certain obligations on the participating parties.
Part of the agreement arrangements was the supply of suitably qualified teachers of English language to FEC school partners together with an appropriate syllabus, which was designed for delivery to high school students in years 10, 11 and 12. The desired outcome of the three-year programme of English teaching is to equip the FEC students with sufficient knowledge of the English language to allow them to sit and pass Chinese high school exams, English exams which will provide them with internationally recognized achievement in English and in some cases IELTS exams toward the end of their third year of high school that is year 12.
Achieving a pass grade in the Chinese high schools exams or a target score in the IELTS examination would provide a platform for students to enter tertiary studies in either China or abroad, or to successfully undertake foundation programmes.
The function of BEIJING WITT is:
To recruit suitably qualified teachers and train them for their role as teachers in the FEC project in China.
To be responsible for the development of a teaching syllabus for FEC schools
To provide in country academic support for all teaching and syllabus matters.
To manage all the foreign teachers assigned in FEC schools.
To provide salary payments, provide travel and medical insurance and etc.
